In September 1962 a group of ministers met in Dallas, Texas, to form a Fellowship to give expression to the essential unity of the Body of Christ under the leadership of the Holy Spirit—a unity that goes beyond individuals, churches or organizations. This was not a movement to build another denomination, but rather an effort to join ministers, churches and ministry organizations of like mind across denominational lines. To provide opportunities for fellowship and to support the objectives and goals of local and national ministries- regional conventions and an annual international convention are held. (417)672- 2268 General Association of General Baptists Similar in doctrine to those General Baptists organized in England in the 17th century, the first General Baptist churches were organized on the Midwest frontier following the Second Great Awakening. The first church was established by the Rev. Benoni Stinson in 1823 at Evansville, Ind. Stinson’s major theological emphasis was general atonement - Christ tasted death for every man. The group also allows for the possibility of apostasy. It practices open Communion and believer’s baptism by immersion. Called ‘liberal’ Baptists because of their emphasis on the freedom of man, General Baptists organized a General Association in 1870 and invited other ‘liberal’ Baptists (e.g., ‘Free Will’ and Separate Baptists) to participate. The policy-setting body is composed of delegates from local General Baptist churches and associations. Each local church is autonomous but belongs to an association. The group currently consists of more than 60 associations in 16 states, as well as associations in the Philippines, Guam, Saipan, Jamaica, Honduras, and India. Ministers and deacons are ordained by a presbytery. The denomination operates Oakland City University in Oakland City, Indiana, and Nursing Homes in Illinois and Missouri. Its Confession of Faith, which it requires all churches to subscribe to, is essentially the old, historic New Hampshire Confession of Faith with a premillennial ending applied to the last article. The churches of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches voluntarily join together to accomplish four goals. (1) Champion Biblical truth—committed to communicating the whole counsel of God in its timeless relevance. (2) Impact the world for Christ—obeying the Lord’s Great Commission to take the life-changing gospel to the entire world. (3) Perpetuate Its Baptist heritage— faithfully promoting its Scriptural legacy and identity. Simpson Treas., Dvid Frazier Periodicals New Church Life General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches A small group, requesting that closer attention be given to prayer, Bible study and a consistent lifestyle, withdrew from the larger Mennonite Church in the Ukraine in 1860. Anabaptist in origin, the group was influenced by Lutheran pietists and Baptist teachings and adopted a quasi-congregational form of church government. In 1874 and years following, small groups of these Germanspeaking Mennonites left Russia, settled in Kansas and then spread to the Midwest west of the Mississippi and into Canada. Some years later the movement spread to California and the West Coast. In 1960, the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Conference merged with this body. Today the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches conducts services in many European languages as well as in Vietnamese, Mandarin and Hindi.
