Open Bible Churches Open Bible Churches (formerly, Open Bible Standard Churches) originated from two revival movements, Bible Standard Conference, founded in Eugene, Oregon, under the leadership of Fred L. Hornshuh in 1919, and Open Bible Evangelistic Association, founded in Des Moines, Iowa, under the leadership of John R. Richey in 1932. Similar in doctrine and government, the two groups amalgamated on July 26, 1935 as “Open Bible Standard Churches, Inc.” with headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. The original group of 210 ministers has enlarged to incorporate over 2,500 ministers and 1,509 churches in 40 countries. The first missionary left for India in 1926. The church now ministers in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands. Historical roots of the parent groups reach back to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in 1906 at Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles and to the full gospel movement in the Midwest. Both groups were organized under the impetus of pentecostal revival. Simple faith, freedom from fanaticism, emphasis on evangelism and missions and free fellowship with other groups were characteristics of the growing organizations. The highest governing body of Open Bible Churches meets biennially and is composed of all ministers and one voting delegate per 100 members from each church. A National Board of Directors, elected by the national and regional conferences, conducts the business of the organization. Official Bible College is Eugene Bible College in Oregon. Open Bible Standard Churches is a charter member of the National Association of Evangelicals and of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches of North America. This body was organized in 1886 as the first church in the United States to take the name “The Church of God.” In 1917 a difference of opinion led this particular group to include the word (Original) in its name. Alton Evans The Orthodox Anglican Church This body was incorporated in 1964 as a selfgoverning Orthodox Anglican church. The Church is committed to the Biblical world view contained in the Holy Scriptures, confessed in the three ancient creeds of the Catholic Church (the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds), experienced in the Sacraments, and practiced through the use of orthodox editions of the Book of Common Prayer. The Church is the United States member of the Orthodox Anglican Communion, the creation of which it authorized in 1967. The Orthodox Anglican Communion is a fellowship of churches around the world that adhere to orthodox theology. In 1971 the Church opened its own theological educational institution: clergy in the United States are trained at the denomination’s school, St. Andrew’s Theological college and Seminary. Under the leadership of the late Rev. J. Gresham Machen, noted conservative New Testament scholar, the new church determined to continue to uphold the Westminster Confession of Faith as traditionally understood by Presbyterians and to engage in proclamation of the gospel at home and abroad. The church has grown modestly over the years and suffered early defections, most notably one in 1937 that resulted in the formation of the Bible Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Dr. Carl McIntire. It now has congregations throughout the states of the continental United States.
