Vreeland, 182 Ameren Way, Ballwin, MO 63021 World Day of Prayer International Committee World Day of Prayer is an ecumenical movement initiated and carried out by Christian women in 170 countries who conduct a common day of prayer on the first Friday of March to which all people are welcome. There is an annual theme for the worship service that has been prepared by women in a different country each year. For March 5, 2010 the WDP Committee of Cameroon has prepared a worship service on the theme, “Let Everything That Has Breath Praise God”. The offering at the WDP is gathered by each WDP National/Regional Committee and given to support projects for women and children and to help people who are in need. The world organization of Methodists and related United Churches is comprised of 76 churches with roots in the Methodist tradition. These churches found in 132 countries have a membership of more than 40 million. The Council’s North American Section, comprised of ten Methodist and United Church denominations, provides a regional focus for the Council in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The North American Section meets at the time of the quinquennial World Conference and Council, and separately as Section between world meetings. In the United States, more than 2,000 local branches, units, camps and centers annually serve more than 14 million people of all ages, races and abilities. About half of those served are female. No one is turned away because of an inability to pay. The Y teaches youngsters to swim, organizes youth basketball games and offers adult aerobics. But the Y represents more than fitness— it works to strengthen families and help people develop values and behavior that are consistent with Christian principles. The Y offers hundreds of programs including day camp for children, child care, exercise for people with disabilities, teen clubs, environmental programs, substance abuse prevention, family nights, job training and many more programs from infant mortality prevention to overnight camping for seniors. The kind of programs offered at a YMCA will vary; each is controlled by volunteer board members who make their own program, policy, and financial decisions based on the special needs of their community. In its own way, every Y works to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. The YMCA was founded in London, England, in 1844 by George Williams and friends who lived and worked together as clerks. Their goal was to save other live-in clerks from the wicked life of the London streets. The first members were evangelical Protestants who prayed and studied the Bible as an alternative to vice. Youth for Christ is active in 180 areas across the U.S., representing over 2,000 different locations where young people are being reached.
