Florida Lambda installed at Ringiing
Phi Delta Theta becomes pioneer fi-atemit}' on campus

he Florida Lambda
chapter of Phi Delta
Theta was formaUy
instaUed as the 228=^ chapter
on Saturday, January 30,
at the Old Asolo Theater on
the grounds of the John and
Mable Ringiing Museum in
Sarasota, Florida. The chapter
is the first national or
international Greek organization
on campus. Arby
Dickert Jr., Clemson '7S,
member-at-largeoftheGeneral
Coundl, direded the
ceremonies. On Friday,
January 29,26 colonj' members
and 20 honorary initiates
signed the Bond.
The Florida Lambda
chapter started as Alpha
Sigma Beta in 1975, a local
fratemity whose letters
stood for Art Students
Brotherhood. It has been
Ringling's first and only fratemity. The
founding president of Alpha Sigma
Beta was WiUiam SiUesk}".
After interviewing many national
fraternities. Alpha Sigma Beta
beccime an interest group of Phi
Delta Theta. A petition for colony
status was unanimously approved
by the General Coundl on April 26,
1991, and a few months later. Alpha
Sigma Beta became the Florida
Lambda Colony of Phi Delta Theta
under the presidency of Brett Circe.
Many Phis from around the state
attended the ceremony induding Ed
Hopper, Chi South province president;
Ken Carle, colony adviser; and
Sean Keefer, chapter consultant.
On Friday, January 29,1993, Phi
Delta Theta initiated 46 members
into the brotherhood of Phi Delta
Theta; 26 imdergraduates and 20
alumni at the First Baptist Church in
downtown Sarasota.

Of the honorary initiates, three
fathers of the undergraduate
members signed the Bond, namely,
Jettery Circe, Charles Moshowitz,
and Barry Spom.
Several current faculty and
administrators of Ringiing ^vere also
initiated, induding the dean of
students, Dan Cormany; the executive
vice president, Frank Countryman;
the chair of the fllusfration
Department, Regan Duniuck; the
president of the institution. Dr.
Arland F. Christ-Janer; and former
president. Dr. Robert E. Perkins.
There have only been three presidents
in the history of RingUng, and
having two of them initiated was
very spedal.
A Phikeia more than 40 years ago.
Col. Albert Richard Haney ^vas
caUed off to World War n before his
initiation. His dream was fulfiUed as
he ^\•as irutiated with the members of
Florida Lambda.

On Saturday morning the
brothers, school offidals, famUy, and
friends attended the instaUation
ceremony at the Old Asolo Theater.
