stood, faced the crowd, and sang
songs of Phi Delta Theta. Arby
Dickert then presented the charter to
chapter president. Jay Sawyer.
FoUowing the ceremony, a
reception was held at the Brenton
Reef Restaurant. Brother Sawyer
addressed the packed house and
infroduced speeches by Ken Carle,
Dan Cormany, Dr. Arland F. Christ-
their speeches, Arby Dickert
RingUng School of Art & Design
was foimded on October 2,1931, by
circus mogul John Ringiing, one of
the partners of the world-famous
Ringiing Brothers and Barnum &
BaUey Circus. The school is located
in beautiful Sarasota, Florida, which
is famous for its white sand beaches.
Ringling's enrollment is approximately
740 students. The school
offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
with five majors: computer graphics,
fine arts, graphic design, illustration,
and interior design. Photography is
offered as minor. Ringiing is fully
accredited by the National Association
of Schools of Art and Design and
Southem Association of Colleges and
Universities. Ringiing has been
ranked the top "up and coming" Art
and Design School in the nation for
the second consecutive year.
Over the past few years, Ringiing
has been recognized as a forerunner
in the world of visual arts, because of
its acquisition of "Wavefront"
computer technology and its tight
relationship with Disney Studios in
Orlando. The students at Ringiing
has received numerous awards from
local, state, regional, and national
contests and exhibits.
Ringiing is also host to many
world famous artists and designers
such as Wendall Minor, president of
the Society of Illustrators (NYC)
Ringiing Graduate; Paul Scher, Kit
Hinrichs, and Woody Pirtle, all
working for Pentagram Studios;
George Pierson, Creative Director of
HBO Ringiing Graduate; and even
world renowned photographer,
Annie Liebowitz.
The campus consists of eight
academic buildings, totaUing more
than 35 studios for painting, sculpture,
computer labs, photography,
woodworking, and lectiu-es. Administrative
offices, the Student Life
Center, the library, cafeteria, four
residence halls, and a campus store
make up the rest of the campus.
The school and our members are
particularly proud of the Office of
Student Life. It offers a wide variety
of programs and opportunities for
each student to grow socially and
academicaUy. A part-time counselor
is also available to students.
The counselor and the Ringiing
Residence Hall staff play a key role
in shaping every student on the
campus. Four Resident Assistants are
Phi DeUs. The Student Life Office
earned statewide recognition for its
environmental Spring Break trip to
one of Florida's State parks.
Tennessee Epsilon chartered
by Michael Choate
The Tennessee Epsilon colony
was installed as the 227*
chapter of Phi Delta Theta on
Saturday, January 23, at the University
of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Robert A. Biggs, executive vice
president; Martin Taylor, assistant
director of chapter services, and
Arby Dickert, General CoimcU
member-at-large, directed the
ceremony on Friday, initiating 34
men.
The colony began as an interest
group in January of 1991. Officers
were elected one week prior to the
start of the Gulf War. The seven
members that began the interest
group worked quickly to attain
colony status, and on October 6,
1991, the interest group was instaUed
as the Tennessee Epsilon colony.
Shortly after the colony was
installed, the members acquired a
house in the upscale Fortwood
neighborhood formerly owned by
Phi Kappa Alpha. The Fortwood
neighborhood association opposed
the new colony moving to the
neighborhood, and they put pressure
on city officials to deny a change in
the chapter's installation, city
officials granted the zoning requirements
