1992, at the annual
meeting of NIC in W ashington,
D.C. The Gold
Medal is the highest honor
given by the NIC, and it
recognizes lifelong achievement
in the ser\ice of
men's coUege fraternities.
Three Phis have been past
recipients of the Gold
Medal-WUUam R. Bayes,
Ohio Wesleyan '01,recei\ed
it in 1951, George S. Ward,
Illinois '10, received the
medal in 1961, and John D.
MiUett, DePauw '33, earned
the honor in 1976.
The prestigious award is
given on the basis of
distinguished ser\'ice to
fratemit}" youth, Uf elong
ser\'ice to the fratemity
movement, efforts to raise
fratemity standards, time
and energy spent in the
promotion of education,
and representing the goal
of aU fraternities to
promote service and
education.
Brother MUler \vas hired
b}" Paul C. Beam as a
traveling secretary' in 1951.
He ser\'ed Phi Delta Theta
as its executive \ice
president from 1955 untU
1991 when he retired. He
has served the Foundation
as its president for the past
nine years.
He has been recognized
as a leader in interfraternal,
professional, and civic
acti\'ities. He ser\'ed as the
president of the Fraterruty
Executives Assodation,
president of the Edgewater
Conference, and has been
recognized by Blue Kev,
Phi Delta Kappa, Order of
Omega, Omicron Delta
Kappa, and Theta Chi and
Tau Kappa Epsilon general
fraternities.
He is a member of
Rotarv, which he served as
district go\"emor in 197S -
79. He recentiy led a Rotar\-
International expedition to
South Africa.

the Legion of Honor, Phi
Delta TTieta's highest
award, at the 1 '^84 General
Convention in New
Orleans.
On receiving the Gold
MedaL Brother MiUer said,
