-Alumni Clubs Founders Day at Miami University The Old North Alumni Club (Oxford) and the Ohio Alpha chapter teamed up in organizing a Founders Day celebration at Miami University on March 25. Tony Ambrose, General Council treasurer, was the featured speaker. Before the banquet, the actives and house corporation members presented an architectural model of the chapter house's new wing. Robert Bartels, Miami '42, and Myron Ells, Miami '45, were inducted into the Golden Legion. Charlie Heimsch, Miami '36; Charles Butier, Hanover '33, and Virgil Schwann, Gndnnati '27, were honored as Palladians. After the ceremonies the Ohio Alpha actives sang the songs of the Fratemity. But the highlight of the evening was the ad lib quartet led by Charlie Heimsch, Don Doan, and Bill Andrews, singing'Tell Me Why She Wears His Ring." '44, James Wood '40, and Reese Bricken '45; (Alabama) Albert Ashley "49; (Southwestern) John Cluck '43; (Louisiana State) Woodley CampbeU '40, and Jack Bushman '40. John Koho., Alabama '20, vras honored as the most senior Phi present. The Montgomery Alumni Club is newly revitalized imder the leadership of President John Trotman, Alabama '48, \"ice President Biff Jackson, AtJntm '62, Bobby ^tox^, Alabama '63, and Zac Perry, Aubum '66. The club's original charter dates from 1881. Pittsburgh Contact: Bill Wrenshall 412 644-5503 The Pittsburgh Alumni Club celebrated Founders Day on Friday AprU 23,1993, at the Gatevray Center Club. President Doug Yager, Pittsburgh '76, presided and George Harris, Pittsburgh '52, gave the invocation. Tirtyeight alumni, wives, and undergraduates attended. Province President Bob Heister, Pittsburgh '76, gave a report on the chapters and colonies in the province. Bart Stevenson, Pittsburgh 34; Dan Snyder, Pittsburgh '39; Charles ^^^ Wright Jr., Pittsburgh '38; and BUI WrenshaU, Washington & Jefferson '41, received the Palladian charm for 55 years of membership. John Harrison, Allegheny '27, received the PaUadian charm for 65 years, and Harbaugh MiUer, Pittsburgh '23, received a 70-year PaUadian charm. The Golden Legion Ceremony was conducted bv Bob Heister and Penn Iota actives. Charles W. HamUton, Akron '46; Chris Phares, Pittsburgh '46; Jack Shaffer, Pittsburgh '44; Lester Snyder, Pittsburgh 55; and BUI Sprague, Miami (Ohio) '45, were inducted. Ralph W. GUbert Jr., Mississippi '62, closed the evening with Phi songs. The club schedules weekly luncheons every Friday at noon in Kaufinann's Department Store on the 11th floor. The annual golf outing is set for June 8,1994, at Champion Lakes. St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. Contact: Bob Morgan 813 343-3214 The club wrapped up its 1993 social activities with a limcheon cruise on the stemwheeler "StarUte Princess." The Phis and their ladies spent two hours on Boca Ciega Bay sightseeing. In the past, vre have had a dinner-dance cruise. The final 1993 activity of the club vras the regular luncheon meeting at the Pass-A-GriUe Yacht Club on September 24. The new year begins with our instaUation banquet on Friday October 29. Outgoing president, Leo Leonardi, is in charge of the arrangements. The incoming oflScers are: Jerry Novario, president; Jim Lemly, vice president; Bob Morgan, secretarv"; Wen Green, treasurer; Walt Pearson, reporter, Tom Martin, chaplain; and Fred Houser, warden. The club gave a gift to the Educational Foundation in honor of past founder and president. Strehler ('58) died AprU 18 in Hartsdale, NY. Dickinson Paul L. Negley ('53) died July 10 in Fenwick Island, DE. He served on the Fenwick Island town council for eight years. Emory Leonard J. Gregory ('49) died January 14,1992, in Dalton, GA. WiUiam E. Henson Jr. ('53) died December 30,1992, in Tampa, FL. Florida J.HaroldTrammeU('36) died AprU 13 in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. He was owner of TrammeU Dredging 8c Construction Co. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a colonel, having served in World War II in the European Theater, where he was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. O.Boyd Wynne Jr. ('39) died June 5 in Tampa, FL. Franklin Richard F. Blackmon ('56) died October 1,1992, in ArUngton, VA. Georgia Edwin T. "Ned" Blackman ('38)diedjune3in GainesviUe, GA. Survivors include a Phi nephew, Wilbur L., Georgia '65. Georgia Southern TobyW. Chapin ('79) died May 5 in Bradenton, FL. Illinois Thomas C. Hartiey ('44) years before he retired. WhUe there he established the CoUege of Engineering's system for student evaluation of instructors, a system later adopted throughout the University. He also served in World War II as a Ueutenant junior grade in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was assigned to Joint Task Force One, which tested the atomic bomb at Bikini Island. Survivors include a Phi brother, John R., Knox '41. Indiana Walden C. Pearson ('35) died February 12 in IndianapoUs, IN. L. Louis Fletcher ('39) died May 10 in Ft. Wayne, IN. He was the owner of L. Louis Fletcher 8c Co. for 42 years. Iowa Ronald FYeisley ('58) died October 30,1992, in Brookfield,WI. Kansas Stewart S. Gray ('39) died AprU 22 in Kansas City, MO. Balfour S.Jeffrey ('28) died July 6,1992, in San Mateo, CA. Warren J. Newcomer ('42) died July 1 in Fairway, KS. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include a Phi son, Warren J., Kansas '75, and a Phi nephew. David W., Kansas '64. Lehigh George E. Loomis ('27) died April 3 in Port Washington, NY. Minnesota Thomas E. Hawkes ('25) died AprU 28 in MinneapoUs, MN. Mississippi Reuben W. Boyett Jr. ('43) died November 30,1992, in Fort Myers, FL. FrederickM. Glass III ('34) died June 2 in New York, NY. He served as chief attorney for the newly formed CivU Aeronautics Board and for the Air Safety Board. He served four years in the Army Air Corps during World War II, rising to chief of staff of the Air Transport Command's Pacific Division and attaining the rank of colonel. He was appointed by President Eisenhower as a member of the Harding Committee, whose recommendations helped create the Federal Aeronautics Administration. President Kennedy appointed him chairman of the Task Force on National Aviation Goals (Project Horizon). Survivors include a Phi son. Frederick M. Jr., Northwestern '66. Percy R.PhUp ('56) died June 17 in Lookout Mountain, TN. He was chairman and chief executive officer of First Tennessee Bank in Chattanooga.
