Many Phis were active in varsity sports this pastyear. In the fall, she brothers partH^ptated in the varsity soccer program. Five were regular starters. Brottier Ron Chesney, a senior captain of the team, was also the recipientof the Homer E. Eari Award, given to the best all-around academic and team player. Brother David Redell, a risingsenior, will be team captain next year. Senwr brottier, Al Burieer, represented tinePhi Delts on ttieVt/MC varsity baskettjall team. The wrestiing team was led by seniorandteam captain, Michael Remming. New initiate, Jeff Maslin, was captain of ttieswim team. Brother Jeff Laumann playedforthe WMC varsity basetiall team. Mike Remming participated in the varsity lacrosse program. In addition, four brothers played fortiieWMCtennis team. Senior Sallandfoott>all teams all helped us to attain this honor. Our kitchen renovation is completed, and we are looking at other areas in the house to improve. Our efforts to improve ourscholarship paid off when we placed third out of 1 Sfratemities and beat botti the all-men's and all-Greek grade averages. The fourth annual Flint Duck Race raised over $2,200forSpecied Olympics, and ournumerous casino nights and valet parteing service hasalso raised money. Ourfavoriteprojectthis year has been operation Bmsh-Up, in which we and a local sorority painted a house in a low-income neighbortiood as part of a community beautification program. We had many goals to accomplish and have come dose to achieving them all. We decreased our $7,000debttoonly$2,000andhaveregainedour Bond and rituals.The transition from quarters to semesters gave us only two nishes instead of three, butweovercamethee>t)stacles and initiated 16newmembers.Ourchaptertookseex>ndplace ^ intheGreekfootballchampionshipcontinuingour attiletic prowess. We cannot settie witii what we have accomplished tilus far; the brotiiers must continue to find solutions instead of excuses. Forthe third consecutive year, we won first place in the Greek All-Sing competition. Our most recent fundraiserforthe Lou Gehrig Foundation was a skatea-thon. We also helped atthe annual fund-raiser forthe Palmer Homefor Children. And the Phikeias held a well-publicized car-smash to raise money forthe Campus Children's Center, Mississippi Beta is ranked third overall in GPA among fratemities. Brother David Gibbs was elected treasurer of the student body, and he was Michigan Epsilon hosted an AIDS awareness workshop for Northwood students. Red Cross workers educated the audience about the disease. selected Junior Man of the Year, Brother Kevin Archer received the office of Student Director of tiie Campus Activities Board, Brother KevinGreen was elected to president of both the Greek Council for Christ and Order of Omega, The biggest news for Mississippi Beta came Founders Day Weekend, On April 23, we announced the first day of ourcampaign to raise moneyfor construction of a house on Fraternity Row, The campaign will be led by our house corporation and a committee of parents. Summer 1993 * TheScroU We pledged 35 new Phikeias in August and initiated 32 of them, A remarkable fact is that Phi Delta Theta had one of the smallest pledge classes on campus yet initiated more than any other Ole Miss fraternity. Our pledge classGPA was a remarkable 3,01, The chapter ranked second of all fraternities on campus in scholarship. In the last two years Mississippi Alpha has placed first and second respectively in grades, Mississippi Alpha organized a flag football team for the Sugar Bowl Classic, We also won a campus wide 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Both our active and Phikeia football teams won the Fraternity Cup Challenge, Ourmajorphilathropy project, the annual "Hoopsfor Kids" basketball toumament, was a huge successfor Mississippi Alpha, The money generated from this charity event is placed in a special account, and each year the interest is given toward building a summer camp for children with cancer. Basketball teams from all over Mississippi and the South battled for two days in three divisions. The winner of the /VAA division received $1,000; the winners in the A and /VA divisions received $350, The chapter also held a silent auction during the weekend. Signed jerseys from Lany Bird, Scotty Pipen, Deion Sanders, and Joe Montana headed the list of items. Autographed footballs from the 49ers, Oilers, and Falcons were also included. Our goal was to raise $25,000, and we are confident that we will succeed, Mississippi Alpha is proud to have elected a fine set of new officers for 1993-94, These include Ted Connell, president; Patrick Bumett, vice president; Floyd Melton, treasurer, and Graham Secton, secretary, MISSOURI St. Louis University Missouri Delta (1983), 3824 Lindell, St. Louis, MO 63108. Torgersen, 648 South Spring St. #H, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701. Rush Chairman - Brad Grupe, Route 1, Box 16, Smithton, MO 65350. Missouri Zeta celebrated its firstyear of existance April 4. During our firstyear, we accomplished much in the areas of scholarship, athletics, community service, and campus activities. The chapter earned best fraternity GPA in the fall semester. Our emphasis on pledge education resulted in ourspring '92 pledge class earning highest pledge GPA, and ourfall '92 pledge class eamed highestGPAof new initiates. Missouri Zeta placed firstin numerous intramural and interfratemity sports events. We won Tri Delta's Frats at Bat, Alpha Xi Delta's Rose Bowl, Tri Sigma's Shout Out, and Alpha Chi Omega's Frisbee Football Contest, We also won both Greek and All School Championships in swimming, 5-on-5 basketball, golf, indoor soccer, and tennis, Wetookthe all-Greek championship in outdoor soccer and flag football. The chapter also held an alumni-father/son golf toumament in the spring. We held a Bounce-4-Bucks with Alpha Chi Omega to raise money for MS research; an Indoor SoccerToumamentphilanthropy for Lou Gehrig's Disease; and a roadside cleanup in Adopt-a- Highway, Ourgreatest achievements were winning GreekWeek and Greek Sing, teaming up with anotherfraternity,Ourpast president. Brad Grupe, was honored as Greek President of the Year and Southeast Man of the Year, Jeff Davis became Student Govemment president, and the chapter held a nonalcoholic event with another fraternity,—Thomas Henweck Southwest Missouri State University Missouri Epsilon (1985), 1107 East Elm St., Springfield, MO 65807. Underthe theme "Phi Delta Theta—The Makerof Men," Missouri Epsilon has soared to great heights during the 1992-93 school year, Ourphilanthropic events included ourfirst "Nightmareon Elm Street" Haunted House to benefit the American Red Cross, and ourfestive Phi Delt Bash to benefit the ALS, Our chapter participates in many service events including the Child Advocacy Council, Springfield Street Cleanup, and work at the local hospital. Our involvement on campus earns praise from University administrators and is an asset during rush. We pledgedasubstantial group of quality rushees, Missouri Epsilon is proud to be the home of the SMSU student regent, student body vice president. Homecoming King, SMSU Big Man on Campus, and other campus leaders. We have earned the top fraternity G PA 16 of the past 17 semesters, and our new scholarship programs continue to move us closertoour3,10 GPAchaptergoal, In April, we received the Striving for Excellence Award, the highesthonorforaGreekorganization at SMSU.
