ecause the six guys we sent last year talked it up so much when
they came back," said Troy Erickson, the chapter's director of
scholarship & internal relations.
Like past CoUeges, this year's program included seminars on
aU aspects of chapter operations. Seminars on rush, Phikeia education,
alumni programming, and leadership topped the Ust.
Brother Erickson came to learn new ideas about how to improve
his chapter's scholarship program.
"We've had weak scholarship in the past, and the people in my
[Leadership CoUege] chapter gave me a lot of good ideas," he
said.
This year the CoUege included three program tracks, or series
of seminars on the same topic. The three tracks on rush, Phikeia
education, and leadership, were some of the best attended educational
seminars.
"The series programs we offered were weU received," said Art
Hoge. "The classrooms were overflowing, and comments were very
positive."
Rutgers wins the Founders Trophy
BY STEVEN C. STEWART
New Jersey Alpha topped
oflFa year of tremendous success
by winning the 1992 - 93
Founders Trophy. A sevenman
delegation clamed the
award for the chapter at the
Leadership CoUege.
The Rutgers Phis put together
a formidable
appUcation for the Founders
Trophy soUdly based on
achievement. The men exceUed
both in campus
activities and in chapter operations.
New Jersey Alpha dominated
the Rutgers campus by
placing half of the chapter on
the dean's Ust, nine members
into Order of Omega, and
two into the prestigious Phi
Beta Kappa honor society.
The chapter also claimed an
editor of the school newspaper,
two executive officers of
the student body government,
two class presidents, and a
class treasurer among its
members.
Mike Calderone, New
Jersey Alpha's vice president,
beUeves the members' levels of
performance stem from their
efforts to seek out involved
and motivated men during
rush. He says the chapter recognizes
that "the campus and
the community make the
chapter. Without them, we
wouldn't exist."
A high level of performance
earned the men
impressive awards from the
Rutgers administration. New
Jersey Alpha was recognized
by the University for Excellence
in Recruitment,
ExceUence in New Member
Education, ExceUence in
Scholarship and ExceUence in
Alumni Relations. It should
come as no surprise that the
men also won the award as
Best Chapter on Campus.
Their accompUshments in
the Fraternity also speak
highly of the chapter. On
their way to capturing top
honors on campus, the men of
New Jersey Alpha also racked
up several Fraternity awards.
They won a Sound Learning
Award, a Conmiunity Service
Citation, a Bigger's Ritual
Trophy, and of course a Gold
Star Award. In addition, they
won honorable mentions for
the Bininger ReUgious Life
Award and the St. Louis Fraternity
Education Award.
The delegates to Leadership
CoUege were "reUeved"
the chapter came away with
the Founders Trophy. After a
tumultuous year of hard work,
the men occupied a chapter
house for the first time, and
they worried that this change
in focus might affect other
areas in which they had traditionaUy
done weU.
"We went through a lot
this year with getting a new
house," said Calderone. "Our
attention as a chapter was focused
on the house as weU as
chapter operations. That
made it a hard year."
The men managed to accUmate
to the new house and
add it to their extensive Ust of
responsibiUties in order to
achieve the level of success
they have come to expect. For
a chapter founded in 1988,
New Jersey Alpha has done
extremely weU, and the determination
of its members has
led the chapter to the top.
