Several Phikeias also attended this year's program, preparing
to be initiated at the end of the CoUege. Adam Ratican and
James Beasley of Baylor, Eric Snider of Eastern Kentucky, Brad
Thomas of the University of Mississippi, Brian Sherman of Nebraska
at Lincoln, and Shane Gruber of Ashland were initiated
at a special ceremony on Saturday evening.
After initiation, the delegates and faculty gathered in coat
and tie for the awards banquet. Trophies for the best chapters
were announced and Educational Foundation scholarship winners
present at the CoUege were honored.
Although the event is fun, chapter leaders stress the importance
of the educational value of the CoUege.Because the
Leadership CoUege program continues to improve year after
year, many Phis are eager to return. But the importance of urging
other chapter members to attend was also expressed.
"I think this program should continue every year ... I'd Uke to
come again next year," Troy Erickson said. "But we need to send
as many new guys as we can." •
McMaster Phis win Housser Trophy
BY BRENT HERSPIEGEL
For the second consecutive
year, the men of the
three-year-old Ontario
Gamma chapter at
McMaster University won
the Housser Trophy,
honouring the best Canadian
chapter. Originally
donated in 1974 by the
Vancouver Alumni Club in
memory of George E.
Housser, past president of
the General CouncU, a new
trophy was donated by the
Canadian alumni at the
1992 Convention. The original
trophy was irreparably
damaged only a few years
after its creation.
Ontario Gamma represented
itself in steUar form
in scholarship, cooperation
with the General Headquarters,
alumni relations,
finances, and community
service, aU of the categories
necessary to win the prestigious
award. Two years ago,
the brothers set a goal at
their chapter retreat to win
the Housser Trophy. Unwavering
dedication and sound
leadership made this lofty
goal reality.
In their pursuit of the
Housser, the brothers won top
fraternal marks on campus for
the second consecutive year.
They also earned the Scholarship
Award, a GHQ_trophy, a
Gold Star, the Biggers Ritual
Trophy, and the Lubbock
Trophy for best continuing
community service program.
For the past two years, Ontario
Gamma has been a runner-up
for this award, so the
achievement of this award was
a tremendous honour. Some
of their community service
events included a 24 km relay
race for the United Way, an
annual 70 km bUce ride raising
money for the ALS Society
and an amazing 10 km "Leap
Frog-athon' to raise money
for the Multiple Sclerosis
Society.
Perhaps foreshadowing
things to come, Ontario
Gamma earned honourable
mention for the Kansas City
Trophy, the first time a Canadian
chapter has ever appUed
for this award.
Ontario Gamma has certainly
set a precedent for
Canadian chapters to foUow.
With the anticipated addition
of two new Canadian colonies,
competition wiU increase
for the Housser, and there's
no doubt Ontario Gamma
wiU be shooting for its third
consecutive Housser for the
1994 General Convention in
Scottsdale, Arizona!
