FAITH<br />

<strong>The</strong> Opening <strong>of</strong> the Eyes <strong>of</strong> Two Blind<br />

Men<br />

"According to your faith be it unto you." Matthew ix. 29.<br />

THIS suggestive and inspiring utterance <strong>of</strong> our Lord's<br />

accompanied the cure <strong>of</strong> two blind men. It was<br />

intended to give us inward illumination, <strong>of</strong> which their<br />

restored eyesight was a symbol. <strong>The</strong>y appear to<br />

have surpassed most <strong>of</strong> the people around them in<br />

their believing expectation, and therefore in their<br />

readiness to receive the special blessing they sought.<br />

Perhaps their very privation had helped them.<br />

Shut <strong>of</strong>f<br />

from ordinary scenes which <strong>of</strong>ten distract men from<br />

their spiritual needs and possibilities, they had evidently<br />

been thinking over what <strong>Jesus</strong> had done elsewhere,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> what He might graciously do for them. True,<br />

no blind men had been previously cured (so far as we<br />

know), though the affliction was very common, owing<br />

to the custom <strong>of</strong> sleeping in the open, to the prevalence<br />

<strong>of</strong> sandstorms, and to the glaring reflection <strong>of</strong><br />

light in a country where verdure was rare. But<br />

though this was probably the first occasion <strong>of</strong> such a<br />
