dead, in the completeness <strong>of</strong> His person, physical as<br />

well as spiritual—or<br />

there was no Resurrection at all.<br />

His body rose as well as His spirit. That body was<br />

the same as He took into the tomb ;<br />

the same, though<br />

so different—different as the " spiritual body " <strong>of</strong><br />

which St Paul speaks <strong>of</strong> as the heritage <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Saints is different from the body <strong>of</strong> our " humiliation "<br />

—different, and yet the same. That difference is<br />

subtly suggested here in the wistful yearning <strong>of</strong> the<br />

disciples to ask a question <strong>of</strong> the awe-inspiring Figure<br />

before them in the grey dawn, " and none durst ask<br />

Him, Who art Thou"<br />

and the identity is seen in<br />

the inner core <strong>of</strong> certainty which underlay that touch<br />

<strong>of</strong> doubt— " Knowing that it was the Lord." Tt was<br />

the Master Himself, in<br />

the wholeness <strong>of</strong> His Personality,<br />

whose voice called across the waters, " Lads,<br />

have ye any fish " and who prepared " the fire, and<br />

the fish laid thereon, and bread," and who, in the old<br />

familiar, loving way, saith unto them, " Come and<br />

dine."<br />

Looking more closely at the narrative, we can<br />

see, too, right through it all, a remarkable<br />

fidelity in the character-painting <strong>of</strong> the various<br />

individuals— the dramatis persona — <strong>of</strong> the<br />

scene.<br />

For instance, see how the various dispositions <strong>of</strong><br />

the disciples reappear and stand out.<br />
