less, eager to lose his disappointment and intense<br />

anxiety to see his Master, in some manual labour.<br />

We see his hands itching to be at the old tasks, his<br />

mind in a fever <strong>of</strong> expectancy, and yet unable to<br />

stand the suspense. And Simon Peter said, " I go<br />

!<br />

a-fishing<br />

We see John, the well-beloved—the mystic ;<br />

and we<br />

can imagine him joining a little unwilling in this<br />

fishing excursion. His heart was in other things<br />

just now; and through the night we can well believe<br />

that he was a little absent-minded in his work. But<br />

when that Voice comes from across the waters,<br />

" Lads, have ye any meat " we can note a stirring<br />

<strong>of</strong> his heartstrings, a catch <strong>of</strong> the breath, a sudden,<br />

tense moment <strong>of</strong> concentration<br />

;<br />

and when again the<br />

Voice comes, " Cast the <strong>net</strong> on the right side <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ship, and ye shall find," the tension is as suddenly<br />

released, light breaks on him in full radiance, and he<br />

cries to Peter—<br />

" It is the Lord." Full <strong>of</strong> significance,<br />

too, is the eager absorption <strong>of</strong> the other disciples in<br />

their sudden success ;<br />

and the quick instinct <strong>of</strong> Peter,<br />

in his mingled awe and eagerness, to gird his fisher'scoat<br />

around him and to cast himself into the sea, that<br />

he might, without an instant's delay, put the beloved<br />

disciple's words to the test.<br />

III.<br />

But it is the self-revelation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> that completes<br />

the argument, both as to the reality, and the significance<br />

<strong>of</strong> His last miracle-scene. This story might
