THE STILLING OF THE TEMPEST<br />

<strong>The</strong> Prayer <strong>of</strong><br />

Unfaith<br />

"And he saith unto them, Why are<br />

ye fearful, O ye <strong>of</strong> little<br />

faith <strong>The</strong>n he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea ;<br />

and there was a great calm." Matthew viii. 26.<br />

" KNOW thine opportunities," said the legend above<br />

the porch <strong>of</strong> a Greek temple. It was a noble<br />

scripture, important for all, and pertinent for all<br />

time.<br />

" Ye shall see the heaven opened" said <strong>Jesus</strong>, " and<br />

the angels <strong>of</strong> God ascending and descending upon<br />

the Son <strong>of</strong> Man." Heaven is opened, but the art<br />

lies in seeing the angels, for<br />

"'Tis only when they spring to heaven that angels<br />

Reveal themselves to you : they sit all day<br />

Beside you, and lie down at night <strong>by</strong> you,<br />

Who care not for their presence, muse or sleep ;!<br />

And all at once they leave you, and you know them<br />

Earlier in this great day <strong>of</strong> great deeds, these<br />

scholars <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> had seen an angel ascending.<br />

When <strong>Jesus</strong> praised the faith <strong>of</strong> the Centurion as<br />

the finest flower <strong>of</strong> human trust, He had yet found<br />

on earth, His disciples recognised, through the sick-<br />
