whence He is—well, that is not for me to settle, but I<br />

know that He has opened mine eyes : you say that He<br />

is not <strong>of</strong> God—well, He has brought God's light to me.<br />

<strong>The</strong> man has got his feet planted down on that solid<br />

fact, and nothing can drive him from it. Questions<br />

<strong>of</strong> theology and logic are not in his line—he is not<br />

clever enough to argue with these quibbling schoolmen<br />

and pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> infallibility. If he were to<br />

engage with them on that ground they would lead<br />

his poor mind a<br />

bewildering dance through a jungle<br />

<strong>of</strong> incomprehensible words until it lost itself in chaos<br />

and madness. He knows better than that. He just<br />

holds fast to that one bit <strong>of</strong> experience which is worth<br />

a whole world <strong>of</strong> theories and propositions. That<br />

morning the world was dark to him, there was no sky<br />

and no green earth, and human faces were unknown<br />

to him except <strong>by</strong> touch, and he had never seen his<br />

own mother. Now the world is bright and beautiful,<br />

the sun is shining, and trees and flowers and meadow<br />

grass are spread around, and the blue heavens are<br />

above him. Behold all things are made new. One<br />

saving word, one miraculous touch <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Jesus</strong>, have<br />

changed his life from a gloomy sepulchre or prison<br />

into a spacious palace furnished with all manner <strong>of</strong><br />

lovely and glorious things. <strong>The</strong>y would as easily<br />

persuade him to doubt his own existence, or to<br />

believe that he had never been born, as to doubt the<br />

kindly, saving, recreative power <strong>of</strong> the man who had<br />

wrought this change in him. You may call Him a<br />

sinner, Sabbath breaker, deceiver, or whatever you<br />

please. All that I care to know is, that He has done<br />

for me what only God could do—what I never believed<br />

even God would do. Explain it as you like, here is
