<strong>The</strong> Witness <strong>of</strong><br />

Experience<br />

" <strong>The</strong> man answered and said : Why,<br />

herein is a marvellous<br />

thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath<br />

opened mine eyes." John ix. 30.<br />

THE whole <strong>of</strong> this story is inimitably lovely, at least<br />

so far as it<br />

concerns <strong>Jesus</strong> and the man to whom He<br />

gave sight. <strong>The</strong> other persons in it are not very<br />

inviting.<br />

Christ's enemies never appeared in an uglier<br />

attitude than they showed here. Never were they<br />

more malicious, vindictive, and intolerant, and never<br />

were they more completely baffled and defeated.<br />

Never did they show so ridiculous and pitiable a figure<br />

as here. An unlearned beggar who had been inspired<br />

with honest conviction and fearlessness <strong>by</strong> the touch<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> was more than a match for all their wisdom<br />

and cunning. We do not <strong>of</strong>ten fall in love with<br />

beggars ;<br />

but we do with this particular one as soon<br />

as we hear him speak. <strong>The</strong>re is none <strong>of</strong> the<br />

beggar's whim in this voice. It gives forth a manly<br />

ring. Christ had not only given the man new eyes,<br />

but the beginnings <strong>of</strong> a new heart, and that in a very<br />

short time. Yesterday a weak, cringing mendicant<br />
