And lastly,<br />

this first miracle was symbolic in the<br />

broadest sense <strong>of</strong> that transforming power<br />

which Christ has always been putting forth<br />

upon the common things <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

He touches the then tasteless water, and it comes<br />

out rich, gladdening wine. I say nothing about the<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> the wine. God forbid that I should mar this<br />

simple talk <strong>by</strong> a discussion which would only disturb,<br />

and perhaps embitter, some minds. <strong>The</strong> Saviour at<br />

least deemed that wine, whatever it<br />

was, much better<br />

than water. And the thought is that He changed<br />

what was insipid, and commonplace, and without<br />

flavour, into something sweet, and exhilarating, and<br />

joy-giving. And nothing could better set forth His<br />

work in the world, and in human hearts. Life is<br />

largely made up <strong>of</strong> things which become to us<br />

eventually much like water. <strong>The</strong>y are necessary<br />

things, as water is. And if we had them not we<br />

should die for want <strong>of</strong> them. But we have them so<br />

much with us, they are so constant a part <strong>of</strong> our daily<br />

experience, that they are apt to become tasteless, dull,<br />

<strong>The</strong> very affections <strong>of</strong> life,<br />

unattractive, unwelcome.<br />

with many, lose the keen raptures which they once<br />

brought, and become a little stale ; and nine-tenths <strong>of</strong><br />

the labours <strong>of</strong> life<br />

and even drudgery ;<br />

settle down into unexciting routine<br />

and the earth we tread, b dutiful<br />

as it is, loses its charm in the eyes <strong>of</strong> those who have
