HEALING OF THE<br />

II.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second thought is that in attempting dimcult<br />

and impossible things at Christ's command,<br />

we get the power to do them.<br />

Where there is the will, God makes the way.<br />

Christ told this man to do what was humanly impossible.<br />

Everybody would have said : It cannot be<br />

done. Science would have called it a piece <strong>of</strong> folly.<br />

And yet in the very act <strong>of</strong> obeying, and trying to<br />

get up, a superhuman power was given to him, and<br />

he surprised himself <strong>by</strong> doing it. Now, <strong>of</strong> course you<br />

say that was a miracle — a thing extraordinary,<br />

exceptional, and quite out <strong>of</strong> the range <strong>of</strong> human<br />

experience to-day. Nothing like that ever happens<br />

now, you say. But you are wrong. Christ intended<br />

to teach us <strong>by</strong> those <strong>miracles</strong> on men's bodies certain<br />

greater things which have to do with mind, heart,<br />

morals, and religion. Things quite as unlikely and<br />

extraordinary are done in the life <strong>of</strong> faith. Christ<br />

does give men now strength enough to do things<br />

which at the first thought <strong>of</strong> them seem well-nigh<br />

impossible. It is true in a thousand ways, that when<br />

God clearly bids us do a difficult thing, He bestows<br />

upon us the power to accomplish it. We can almost<br />

work impossibilities, if we attempt them with a<br />

cheerful spirit <strong>of</strong> obedience, and a determined faith.<br />

God is always asking us to do what our weak and<br />

frightened hearts shrink from—things which seem<br />

beyond our strength. It is much as it was in the
