WALKING ON THE SEA 221<br />

which the angry billows dared not question, said,<br />

"Peace, be still!" Immediately there was a great<br />

calm ; not only a calm, but a great calm. <strong>The</strong> clear,<br />

placid waters <strong>of</strong> the resting sea reflected the sparkling<br />

stars <strong>of</strong> the deep blue firmament above, as if no wayward<br />

blast had ever disturbed their silent repose.<br />

What a grand change !—from tumult to stillness, from<br />

danger to safety, from utter despair to gladness and<br />

joy !<br />

Surely no other friend could have done so much<br />

for the disciples as their Lord did on this occasion.<br />

Ah !<br />

my<br />

friends, the lesson which this incident is<br />

designed to teach is always true ; as true now as it<br />

was ni<strong>net</strong>een centuries ago : that no earthly friend<br />

can help us as effectually as our Lord can. Others<br />

may express sympathy with us in our trials, may weep<br />

with us in our sorrows,—and we bless God for the<br />

kindness which abounds on every hand, and the help<br />

we receive from loving <strong>Christian</strong> friends,—but after<br />

all<br />

how inadequate the most potent human aid in the<br />

trying circumstances we have sometimes to pass<br />

through !<br />

<strong>The</strong>re<br />

are depths <strong>of</strong> grief into which our<br />

dearest friends cannot follow us ;<br />

there are' extremes<br />

<strong>of</strong> anguish which those who are nearest to us cannot<br />

understand ; there are times when we feel ourselves<br />

tossed about on the troubled<br />

ocean <strong>of</strong> life alone, with<br />

no one near that can give us a helping hand, left to<br />

perish amidst the howling tempests that beat upon<br />

our shattered bark. But Christ can follow us there<br />

He can lift up His voice higher than the roaring<br />

waves ;<br />

He can bring rest, and peace, and joy to our<br />

storm-tossed souls. What a comforting thought !<br />

" He will never leave us nor forsake us ; " when we<br />

" pass through the waters " He is with us ;<br />
