Or, perhaps, in the silent home, when the blinds<br />

have been down, and the spirit has been lonely, and<br />

the heart heavy, as we think <strong>of</strong> the vacant place that<br />

cannot again be filled, we have said to ourselves,<br />

" <strong>The</strong> Lord is here." He has taken us <strong>by</strong> the hand,<br />

and led us aside from the multitude, and we thank<br />

Him for the quiet, if in it we have learned to know<br />

Him better.<br />

<strong>The</strong> main thing about this cure, and about the<br />

spiritual blessings represented <strong>by</strong> it, is the effect <strong>of</strong><br />

vital contact with <strong>Jesus</strong> Christ. We read that our<br />

Lord put His fingers in his ears. It must be<br />

remembered that the man could not speak or hear,<br />

but he could feel and see, and when <strong>Jesus</strong> touched<br />

his ear and his tongue, it would convey to him this<br />

thought, " I am going to cure this and that, and this<br />

healing power is coming forth from Myself." It was<br />

the fulfilment <strong>of</strong> what was typified in that poor widow's<br />

room, when the prophet Elisha stretched himself<br />

upon the child, as if he was willing that his own life<br />

should be imj arted to him. It is personal contact<br />

with the Lord which inspires us with new life,<br />

and the life becomes more vivid in proportion<br />

to our trust, which keeps us in vital contact with<br />

Him. This man must have gone with a strange<br />

feeling aside from the multitude, when he stood*<br />

waiting and hoping, as if he said, " Lord, I want<br />

to speak and to hear, and can only cast myself on<br />

<strong>The</strong>e."<br />

<strong>The</strong> personal sympathy <strong>of</strong> the Lord <strong>Jesus</strong> Christ<br />

with us is<br />

surely suggested <strong>by</strong> the phrase, " He looked<br />

up to heaven and sighed." He was moved with pity<br />

for the sufferer, and felt much as He did when He
