THE WITHERED HAND<br />

Mark iii. 1-5.<br />

It is a remarkable fact that the Son <strong>of</strong> God found<br />

time for the healing <strong>of</strong> bodily diseases. He came<br />

from heaven to do a spiritual work. He had set<br />

before Him the redemption <strong>of</strong> souls from sin, and<br />

their restoration to God, yet He was constantly<br />

engaged in curing diseases. One might have<br />

supposed that, coming as He did from a painless,<br />

sorrowless world, He would have had no sympathy<br />

with sufferers, that He would have exhorted such to<br />

virtue and self-control, and would have contented himself<br />

with arousing in them an expectation <strong>of</strong> a time<br />

coming when pain would be no more. But it was not<br />

so. He sympathised so deeply with the ills that flesh<br />

is heir to, that it is said, " Himself bore our sins and<br />

took our<br />

sicknesses," and with a pity as great as His<br />

power He laid His hand on the sick folk and healed<br />

them.<br />

Yet He had a stupendous spiritual work to do,<br />

and only three years <strong>of</strong> public ministry. In it He<br />

was so busy that He had sometimes no leisure so<br />

much as to eat, and His only opportunity for prayer<br />

was at night-time on the mountain. Still He found<br />

time to heal bodily infirmities, nor was there any<br />
