" O woman, great is thy faith ; be it done unto thee even as<br />

thou wilt." Matthew xv. 28.<br />

<strong>The</strong> third year <strong>of</strong> the ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> was a crucial<br />

one in several respects. He was popular with the<br />

multitude, and He was feared and hated <strong>by</strong> the<br />

classes. <strong>The</strong> people would have taken Him and<br />

made Him a king, as though to fulfil the predictions<br />

<strong>of</strong> their prophets concerning a conquering Messiah.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Pharisees, rulers, and priests would have pursued<br />

Him to the death to satisfy their hatred and jealousy<br />

concerning Him. It might be that <strong>Jesus</strong> retired to<br />

the coasts <strong>of</strong> Tyre and Sidon to escape both these<br />

dangers.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was another reason which might be supposed<br />

to actuate our Lord in thus moving towards the<br />

extreme north <strong>of</strong> the land. <strong>The</strong> disciples, as the end<br />

came near, required to be taught more fully the<br />

divine necessity which was impelling their Master<br />
