and the yeasty froth fell even on the Master's form,<br />

some one, remembering what the Centurion had done,<br />

might have suggested, " Had not John better go astern<br />

and gently wake Him, and say, Master, do not trouble<br />

to rise, speak a word only, and the storm shall cease "<br />

That would have been fine in its way, still only an<br />

imitation. It would not have been perfect. <strong>The</strong><br />

opportunity they now had, left room for a<br />

yet nobler<br />

faith. <strong>The</strong> boat was filling. <strong>The</strong> tempest still was<br />

rising. What then " He is asleep, and we are with<br />

Him. Earlier in the day He<br />

said, <strong>The</strong> Son <strong>of</strong><br />

Man hath not where to lay His head,' but He has<br />

found a pillow. Full <strong>of</strong> faith, He sleeps in God. With<br />

equal faith let us do what men can in such a gale, but<br />

no panic, no cry. Be still and know that He who<br />

healed the leper and saved the Roman's boy will not<br />

forget His own servants ! Let the storm awake Him,<br />

but we will be still. Let those keep watch whose<br />

turn it is, the others sleep as He is sleeping." What a<br />

"Well done good and faithful servants" this would draw<br />

from the waking Christ .What a flash <strong>of</strong> wings would<br />

have lit up this narrative. <strong>The</strong> angel darting upward<br />

faster than light can travel, would have entered heaven<br />

with the good tidings that the kingdom had come,<br />

and the will <strong>of</strong> God was being done on sea that night<br />

as it is done in heaven.<br />

But no ! they missed the sign. <strong>The</strong> storm burst<br />

into their souls and blew their faith away. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

rushed in panic to the stern, and with clamours that<br />

rose above the howling <strong>of</strong> the wind, they cried,<br />

" Master ! carest Thou not that we perish ! Save, Lord,<br />

or we perish " <strong>The</strong> great chance passed for ever.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Master rebuked His disciples, and it was with an
