and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die."<br />

John xi. 25, 26.<br />

"LIFE and immortality"—such, according to the<br />

Apostle, was the precious possession brought to light<br />

<strong>by</strong> the Gospel <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> Christ. It was thus that the<br />

Gospel met human nature at the point where human<br />

nature was weakest, and cast its own blessed light<br />

upon the path when it was darkest. In this lay the<br />

secret <strong>of</strong> its success. For while men might not all be<br />

conscious <strong>of</strong> sin, might not perceive their need <strong>of</strong><br />

pardon or <strong>of</strong> moral strength, they were all painfully<br />

conscious <strong>of</strong> the vanity <strong>of</strong> life, <strong>of</strong> its oppressive cares<br />

and fleeting joys, <strong>of</strong> the dark shadow which surrounded<br />

it as it lay " between a sleep and a sleep." As one<br />

after another dropped from their side in life's race,<br />

they perceived but too clearly how the all-devouring<br />

grave waited for<br />
