tions which were heard two, and even three, thousand<br />

miles away, were not perceived <strong>by</strong> the people who<br />

lived at the foot <strong>of</strong> the mountain. <strong>The</strong> explanation<br />

<strong>of</strong> that curious fact given <strong>by</strong> scientific students is<br />

that<br />

the air was filled with volcanic dust, which, like a<br />

thick curtain, cut <strong>of</strong>f all the sound waves. Around<br />

the pathway <strong>of</strong> the transgressor there is sometimes<br />

an atmosphere in which every spiritual voice is<br />

deadened into dumbness. <strong>The</strong> sphere in which you<br />

live and move is charged with the cares and secular<br />

interests <strong>of</strong> life, perhaps permeated through and<br />

through with follies and dissipations which separate<br />

between the inward ear and the ominous thundernotes<br />

which might prove your salvation. You stand<br />

at the focus <strong>of</strong> danger. Others hear the warning<br />

tones. <strong>The</strong> angels who wait in their thousands<br />

before this new Sinai may listen with awe. And yet<br />

you are stone-deaf and unheeding. "Ye stiff-necked<br />

and uncircumcised in heart and in ears, ye do always<br />

resist the Holy Ghost."<br />

" To-day, if ye will hear His<br />

voice, harden not your hearts."<br />

<strong>The</strong> voice still speaks in the temple, and its tones<br />

are full with both warning and mercy. Saved from<br />

pain, helplessness, and shame, <strong>by</strong> a miracle <strong>of</strong> pity, see<br />

to it that you do not put your salvation into needless<br />

jeopardy. He who heals our impurities magnifies<br />

His word no less <strong>by</strong> making it mighty to keep from<br />

sin. <strong>The</strong> second command, as well as the first,<br />

becomes a fulfilled promise as we are in the act <strong>of</strong><br />

obeying it. Let there be no temporising, no submission<br />

to the new temper <strong>of</strong> impotence which seeks<br />

to insinuate itself afresh into the life. If the<br />

Deliverer has come to you, give Him the love for
