<strong>The</strong> Importunate Prayer for<br />

Light<br />

"And <strong>Jesus</strong> said unto him: What wilt thou that I should<br />

do unto thee <strong>The</strong> blind man said unto Him : Lord, that I<br />

should receive my sight. And <strong>Jesus</strong> said : Thy<br />

made thee whole." Mark x. 51, 52.<br />

NOTHING could be more common-place than the<br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> this story. A blind man sitting <strong>by</strong> the<br />

roadside begging. We see that every week ;<br />

we<br />

might see it every day. But we do not see these<br />

men as Christ saw them. Blind men seem to have<br />

had a peculiar power in drawing out His sympathies.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se poor creatures from whom the light and<br />

beauty were always hidden fetched His pity at once.<br />

And they affected Him the more because they<br />

reminded Him <strong>of</strong> His greater work. <strong>The</strong>y were a<br />

type <strong>of</strong> blind humanity. All men had the darkening<br />

veil upon their eyes, and He had come to call them<br />

from darkness unto light.<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong> was passing <strong>by</strong>, with a confused and noisy<br />

crowd <strong>of</strong> people following and surrounding, when suddenly,<br />

above the tramp <strong>of</strong> feet<br />

this man's piteous wail for mercy rose.<br />

and hubbub <strong>of</strong> voices,<br />

It sounded like<br />

the ordinary beggar's cry for alms, and the people,<br />
