in many a life. The sermon never goes more than
half way.
It wants carrying forward and backing up.
In hundreds of cases it is lost altogether for want of
that. The good seed perishing of cold because there
is no warmth of love about to nurse and keep it alive.
Take these people by the hand and lift them up.
Think of the young men and women in nearly
every congregation who have come up to town to live,
well-nigh friendless there. Think how lonely they
are in their apartments
;
all the dear faces absent
which they have known and loved, father and mother
praying for them in some village home long miles
away ; but no home for them among strangers. Think
of their temptations. Think what you would feel if
your own boys and girls were placed like that, and
how your hearts would overflow with gratitude if you
heard that some of Christ's people had shown them
kindness and taken them by the hand. As you
would that men should do to your sons and daughters,
so do you to theirs. There are many of you always
complaining that there is no Christian work which
you can do, or which you are fit for. Well, if there is
nothing else to be done, you can do this. And I do
not believe that there can be any Christian work more
Christ-like, for it
was what Jesus Himself was always
doing. He took people by the hand and lifted
them up.
