during the life <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong>, so after His departure from<br />

the world, the life <strong>of</strong> Lazarus was one <strong>of</strong> quietness<br />

and obscurity, not unfaithful, not, we may well believe,<br />

unfruitful. <strong>The</strong> circumstances, however, which would<br />

have made him the centre <strong>of</strong> a wondering curiosity,<br />

made it impossible for him to assume a position <strong>of</strong><br />

prominence. <strong>The</strong> miracle itself, important as it<br />

was, was probably left unrecorded until<br />

<strong>of</strong> that little circle had passed away.<br />

Our Lord, in whatever circumstances He might be<br />

placed, was never unmindful <strong>of</strong> the work which the<br />

Father had given Him to do ; while He ministered<br />

with unwearied diligence and devotion to the bodily<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> men, He never left out <strong>of</strong> view their higher<br />

interests ; moved as He was <strong>by</strong> every pang that rends<br />

the heart, sympathising with human grief and
