HEALING OF THE SICK OF THE<br />

PALSY<br />

<strong>The</strong> Power to do comes with the Attempt<br />

to obey.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>n saith he to the sick <strong>of</strong> the palsy : Arise, take up thy<br />

bed, and go into thine house. And he arose, and departed to<br />

his house." Matthew ix. 6, 7.<br />

<strong>The</strong> first thought suggested here is that if we each<br />

one have a bit <strong>of</strong> faith, Christ's power will come upon<br />

us, though not another person in the assembly asks<br />

for it, or cares to have it. Divine gifts are more<br />

easily received when the very atmosphere <strong>of</strong> the<br />

place is receptive, when the atmosphere is sympathetic<br />

and electrical, when many hearts and minds<br />

together are swayed <strong>by</strong> the same impulses, and alive<br />

with the same expectancy. Souls then rise heavenward<br />

together, each one lifted up <strong>by</strong> the mass <strong>of</strong><br />

hallowed emotion with which he is in contact. But<br />

that help is not indispensable. One in the crowd<br />

may get virtue from Christ, though all the rest shut<br />

their hearts against it. Here was a saving act done<br />

in an atmosphere <strong>of</strong> unbelief. <strong>The</strong> company was<br />

very mixed. <strong>The</strong>re were religious pr<strong>of</strong>essors, whose<br />

piety was all outside. <strong>The</strong>re were scribes with a<br />
