"Watermarks" in<br />

the narrative.<br />

I. // throws many subtle and suggestive sidelights<br />

on the Saviour's personality.<br />

His goodness and unselfishness were constantly<br />

shown in His thought and care for others when on His<br />

way to the last Passover and the great sorrow <strong>of</strong> His<br />

life. Though He knew all that was to befall Him, He<br />

never lost His interest in the men and women around<br />

Him through selfish absorption in His own trouble.<br />

How sorrow blinds most <strong>of</strong> us to the needs and<br />

miseries <strong>of</strong> others ! Many people who have any pain<br />

or affliction to bear demand the whole attention <strong>of</strong><br />

return, and some<br />

those around them and give none in<br />

will not readily talk about anything else than their<br />

trouble. But He left us an example in this too—that<br />

it is possible to face the most dire calamities, nay, even<br />

to prepare ourselves for them, <strong>by</strong> being accessible to the<br />

call <strong>of</strong> others' need, and busying ourselves in helping<br />

them.<br />

From the moment when the Cross loomed up<br />

before <strong>Jesus</strong>, to the moment when He breathed His<br />

last upon the "accursed tree," you will find no hint <strong>of</strong><br />

failing interest on His part in the men and women<br />

around Him.<br />

Rather does His interest take a wider<br />

sweep, His love a warmer colour, His pity a tenderer<br />

quality. <strong>The</strong> first effect <strong>of</strong> that vision <strong>of</strong> the Cross<br />

was to quicken His steps " in going about," and to<br />

make His hands busier in "doing good " (Acts x. $S).<br />

Knowing how brief a time remained for Him, He
