There was no dishonor there. so make sure you guard it wisely-
After all is said and done. you'll be glad the name is
s~otless when it's given to Your son." and, "The distance a
I
man goes is not as important as the direction that he takes."
I wish each and everyone of you had had the omortunity
of knowing James Gordon Grayson. He was the most dynamic
werson I have ever known. Imprzssive in size and appearance, a I
typlical Virginia Gentleman whose very presence commanded attention.
He was more than 6 foot 7 inches in height, as tall I
and as wide as the doorway and when he walked into a room, all
eves were on him. And yet a more kind and gentle man I have
never known.
I am glad he shared his love of God and the beauty of
nature with me and his unending storehouse of knowledge in
philosophy. literature and poetry. He never spoke without quot- I
ing$omethinp pretaining to the situation to leave a deep'r impression
upon one.
Lund Washinntonls words about the "first of the Gray- I
sons in America......'He was a man of exceedingly fine address
notablv of fine blood......of a refined and wealthy family, as
his acquirement, person and habits bore ample evidence of.. . .
could well have been written of him. So pure has the line been
handed down to us.....I was so pleased for his description for
I could not have said it better,
I
James Gordon Grayson was stron~ of constitution and
morals and vet tender and mild in disposition and manner. A
giant of a man.
Ask other readers to give us a glimpse of at least
one of their earlier ancestors, I think it would be interesting
to know what others of our ancestors were like or what the family 1
life was like, Just a thumbnail sketch or an episode.
I have found it very helpful to have a map of the locations
of the different lines so as to understand where they came 1
from in keepina the different ones sperate and so I have enclosed
one of each of the states where Graysons have been found in their
earliest locations. They can be cut to fit and you could enclude
one each month if you did not want to run them all together. I
Thank Ella for me and know that we thoroughly enjoy the
newsletter and P U ~ it to good use. There is so much about mv
family in it. My only objection is to the $5. reruns. That isn't I
fair to the late-comers. We would have been in on the beginning
if you had let us know. Keep the news coming.
