proportion <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir impatience <strong>the</strong> figure was brought nearer, though yet out of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir reach, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir food decreased till, at <strong>the</strong> last extremity of desperation, <strong>the</strong><br />

keeper resigned <strong>the</strong> figure, well charged with <strong>the</strong> nauseous food before described,<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir wishes. While <strong>the</strong>y gorged <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> dreadful meat, he <strong>and</strong><br />

his colleagues caressed <strong>and</strong> encouraged <strong>the</strong>m. By <strong>the</strong>se means <strong>the</strong> whites <strong>in</strong>gratiated<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves so much with <strong>the</strong> animals, as <strong>to</strong> produce an effect directly opposite<br />

<strong>to</strong> that perceivable <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> black figure; <strong>and</strong>, when <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

employed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pursuit for which <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong>tended, afforded <strong>the</strong> protection<br />

so necessary <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir employers.<br />

Runaways adopted various strategies <strong>to</strong> reduce <strong>the</strong> effectiveness of bloodhounds<br />

as trackers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bath<strong>in</strong>g or rubb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves with certa<strong>in</strong><br />

plants <strong>and</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g copious amounts of pepper (Zips 1999, 77–83). The Maroons<br />

generally preferred <strong>to</strong> elude <strong>the</strong> dogs, but when <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong> groups <strong>the</strong>y<br />

often s<strong>to</strong>od <strong>the</strong>ir ground <strong>and</strong> attacked <strong>the</strong> animals fiercely, sometimes kill<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or wound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m severely (Franco 1973, 81; Villaverde 1982, 46, 56–57, 86). If<br />

<strong>the</strong> evidence from <strong>the</strong> diary of Estévez is typical, <strong>the</strong>se animals had a high<br />

mortality rate as a result of Maroon retaliation <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> stra<strong>in</strong> of long treks,<br />

climb<strong>in</strong>g hills <strong>and</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g without food for long periods (Villaverde 1982, 46,<br />

71, 82, 93, 97 passim). Estévez certa<strong>in</strong>ly did not display much greater pity for<br />

his own dogs than for <strong>the</strong> Maroons whom he brutally hunted down.<br />

Military expeditions sometimes reported that <strong>the</strong> mortality rates suffered<br />

by <strong>the</strong>ir adversaries were much higher than those of <strong>the</strong>ir own forces, <strong>and</strong> not<br />

<strong>in</strong>frequently that <strong>the</strong>y had raided <strong>and</strong> destroyed <strong>the</strong> Maroons’ dwell<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong><br />

provision fields. But equally often <strong>the</strong>y returned defeated, harassed, <strong>and</strong><br />

dra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> spirit <strong>and</strong> body. 12 Few of <strong>the</strong>m wanted <strong>to</strong> revisit <strong>the</strong> scene of such<br />

unfamiliar warfare, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> vast majority of <strong>the</strong>ir opponents managed <strong>to</strong><br />

escape, returned <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir previous locations <strong>and</strong> rebuilt <strong>the</strong>ir wrecked settlements.<br />

Maroons were often physically but only occasionally psychologically<br />

wounded, for <strong>the</strong>y unders<strong>to</strong>od that <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>to</strong> pay a high price for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>freedom</strong>.<br />

Like <strong>the</strong> spider, when <strong>the</strong>ir web was destroyed <strong>the</strong>y knew <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>to</strong><br />

rebuild it aga<strong>in</strong> swiftly. While Maroons might suffer heavily from <strong>the</strong> periodic<br />

expeditions, <strong>the</strong>y were able <strong>to</strong> carry <strong>the</strong> war <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir enemies by destroy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

whole plantations, kill<strong>in</strong>g some or all of <strong>the</strong> Whites found <strong>the</strong>re <strong>and</strong><br />

seiz<strong>in</strong>g booty. Maroon attacks were facilitated by <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>ir numbers<br />

often <strong>in</strong>cluded members who once belonged <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se plantations <strong>and</strong> knew<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir strengths <strong>and</strong> weaknesses well. They also had friends <strong>and</strong> relatives on<br />

<strong>the</strong> plantations who often assisted <strong>the</strong>m secretly.
