or mutilat<strong>in</strong>g men’s genitalia <strong>and</strong> women’s genitalia <strong>and</strong> breasts; prim<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir anuses with gunpowder which was <strong>the</strong>n set alight; bury<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m up <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> neck alive <strong>and</strong> pour<strong>in</strong>g sugar over <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>to</strong> be consumed by flies or ants;<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m eat <strong>the</strong>ir own faeces <strong>and</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>ir own ur<strong>in</strong>e; sew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

lips <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with wire; rap<strong>in</strong>g women <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong>ir husb<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> children;<br />

<strong>and</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g up children <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong>ir parents.<br />

In Berbice around <strong>the</strong> mid-eighteenth century, manager Gerlach brutalized<br />

a seven-year-old girl for what <strong>the</strong> governor considered trifl<strong>in</strong>g offences:<br />

he gave her 250 lashes, had her placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>cks without food (except what<br />

friends <strong>and</strong> relatives smuggled <strong>to</strong> her) <strong>and</strong> kept her <strong>the</strong>re for three weeks.
