When we first decided to translate those of Weininger’s writings that had not yet
been translated into English, we suspected that if we didn’t then nobody else would.
Since then, we discovered that Professor Steven Burns from Dalhousie University in
Canada had already embarked on a translation of Über die letzten Dinge (which he
translates as “On Last Things”, but which can also be translated “On Ultimate
Things”), and was much further advanced in that process than we were. Enormously
impressed with his work after reading an impeccable translation of a chapter from
Über die letzten Dinge published some ten years earlier, we decided to share with him
what translations we had already made of that work, and focus the remainder of our
efforts on the Taschenbuch (literally, “Pocketbook”) instead.
We would like to thank Therese Foote for providing us with excellent quality
translations of some of the “Aphoristic remarks”. Albina Leibman-Klix helped us
with some of the “Notebook” aphorisms, and Marco de Innocentis translated the
Italian in Weininger’s letters. We are also deeply indebted to Steven Burns whose
work helped us to vastly improve our translation of the aphorisms from On Last
Things, and Allan Janik, and his assistant Judith Bakascy, who helped with the
“Notebook” and “Letters”. Any inaccuracies that remain in this translation are a result
of our own shortcomings.
