<strong>The</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Dame held the door for Deborah<br />
<strong>and</strong> they entered the Assembly Hall. <strong>The</strong>re was a<br />
grinding of seats as the inmates rose <strong>to</strong> acknowledge<br />
the arrival of the Gr<strong>and</strong> Dame. Deborah stepped up<br />
on<strong>to</strong> the stage <strong>and</strong> s<strong>to</strong>od beside the vaulting horse.<br />
She clasped her h<strong>and</strong>s in front of her <strong>and</strong> gazed out<br />
over the assembled congregation. <strong>The</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Dame<br />
ordered the inmates <strong>to</strong> take their seats <strong>and</strong><br />
unhurriedly she asked Penelope Ann Evans <strong>to</strong> step<br />
on<strong>to</strong> the stage <strong>and</strong> call registration.<br />
As she passed by Deborah, Penelope Ann<br />
threw her a sympathetic glance; Debs winked. <strong>The</strong><br />
Red-shirt called registration efficiently <strong>and</strong> when she<br />
called Deborah's name the gal on the stage turned <strong>to</strong><br />
face her <strong>and</strong> replied in a voice filled with irony, "Yes,<br />
Evans, I'm here."<br />
Even the Gr<strong>and</strong> Dame grinned at that.<br />
Finally the Red-shirt returned <strong>to</strong> her place by<br />
the wall <strong>and</strong> the Gr<strong>and</strong> Dame s<strong>to</strong>od up. She moved <strong>to</strong><br />
the front of the stage <strong>and</strong> addressed the inmates. She
