1 Overview of CONDUIT The purpose of a flight control system is not only to augment the stability of an aircraft, but to improve its handling as well. During the early years of flight control system development, design parametrics for dynamic stability such as the Phugoid <strong>Mode</strong>, Short Period <strong>Mode</strong>, and n/α were used. However, these criteria did not account for unconventional designs, nor did they necessarily improve the pilot’s opinion of the way the aircraft handled. Thus, research was performed as a means to quantify good handling qualities of aircraft. A rating scale was developed to rate the handling of an aircraft, the Hooper-Carper Rating scale, shown in Figure 1. Figure 1 - Cooper-Harper rating scale 1
This rating system was used in conjunction with flight test data using a variable stability aircraft to create a group of handling qualities specifications, in which measurable parameters of an aircraft’s performance could be used to predict pilot opinion of the handling of the aircraft. By incorporating handing qualities specifications into the design of an aircraft, it will most likely have good handling qualities. However, there are certain consequences involved when doing so. The process of evaluating a single spec (specification) is time consuming, much less several specs, resulting in possibly long design cycles. Furthermore, the presence of multiple competing specs adds another level of complexity to the problem. Another difficulty is that if the model, control architecture, or any component of the system changes, the entire process must be repeated. Finally, while a system might be created that meets all necessary specifications, chances are that it is not optimal. Trade-off studies may be developed as a means to make best use of the available control authority, however, this can be time consuming. In response to these difficulties, a multi-objective optimization program, called CONSOL-OPTCAD, was developed at the University of Maryland. This program interfaced with the MATLAB environment, using MATLAB’s system modeling capabilities. A model following control system was developed for the UH-60, using the CONSOL-OPTCAD multi-objective optimization to optimize the control system based on several handling qualities specifications. In doing so, the capability of the optimization routine was demonstrated. However, its use was still limited in that the UH-60 problem was hard-wired into CONSOL-OPTCAD. Modifying the code to work with a new problem involved several months of work. A variant of this effort was thus 2
