Building the block diagram in Simulink is a matter of assembling the blocks, interconnecting them, and setting their values. Input and Output signals to and from the system are incorporated using Simulink Input/Output blocks, which allow CONDUIT to choose any input and output for a particular simulation. Furthermore, specialized Simulink switch blocks provide the capability for CONDUIT to select different control architectures or feedback paths. Thus, by configuring the system in such a way, CONDUIT has great flexibility over how the simulations can be run. 1.1.3 Design Parameters (Setup <strong>Mode</strong>) In order for CONDUIT to optimize the system, it must have the ability to alter it. Thus, CONDUIT allows the user to select parameters of the block diagram for COMATLAB to modify. These parameters are referred to as Design Parameters, and are essentially MATLAB variables that can be used in any component of the block diagram. 7
They are typically used as gains, however they could be used for nearly any other purpose. Design Parameter Figure 5 - Design Parameters Design parameters are defined by simply adding them to the block diagram. When the CONDUIT analysis, or “problem”, is opened, CONDUIT scans the block diagram to find the design parameters. They are distinguished by the required “dp_” or “dpp_” prefixes in their names, which define the variables as design parameters and positive-valued design parameters, respectively. 1.1.4 Specs (Setup <strong>Mode</strong>) The handling qualities specifications, or “specs” for short, represent the actual government handling qualities specifications, such as ADS-33 or MIL-STD-1797. The CONDUIT specs are modular, so that any combination of specs can be assigned to a CONDUIT problem by just “plugging them in”, metaphorically speaking. Each spec is self-contained, that is, they contain all the code required to evaluate the aircraft and plot the results, as specified by each government handling qualities specification. 8
