On the left is the name of each design parameter. The center column shows the actual value, while the column on the right shows the frozen state of the parameter. “Freezing” a parameter has the effect of removing it from the set of design parameters that COMATLAB can vary in an optimization. In addition to displaying the value and frozen state of the design parameters, the design parameters window allows the user to change the values as well. 17
1.2 Method of Optimization A CONDUIT optimization is an iterative process. The optimization starts with an evaluation of the system with the initial design parameters. This evaluation becomes iteration zero and serves as a starting point. COMATLAB is then called. It investigates the system at the starting point to determine how to vary the design parameters to better the system. The design parameters are then changed to these new values, only slightly different from the previous values, creating a new iteration. COMATLAB is called again, and the process repeats. Thus, the optimization starts with a given set of design parameters, and slowly iterates towards the final values. To understand certain concepts of CONDUIT and Batch Mode, the means by which COMATLAB evaluates the system and determines the best change in design parameters must be explained.
