overdamped, no peaks can be found to make a calculation, thus an arbitrary value of –1 is<br />

assigned, shown as the arrow on the real axis. Thus, because of the problems with this<br />

spec in determining the damping ratio, and that the results will jump in their value when<br />

overdamped (and remain at that value regardless of the actual overdamped value), the<br />

damping ratio spec is a weakly driving spec in an optimization.<br />

Therefore, the robustness plots can also be used to identify specs which only<br />

weakly drive the optimization. After discovering a weak spec, it could then be replaced<br />

with a stronger spec. In this case, however, there was no alternative.<br />

The remainder of the specs vary to some degree, but they do not come close to<br />

violating the Level 1 ratings. The Eigenvalues spec does not change at all, as the<br />

variation in parameters does not cause instability.<br />

3.4.6 Conclusions of the Robustness Plot Capability<br />

Several things have been shown in the demonstration of the Robustness capability<br />

of Analysis <strong>Mode</strong>. First, it showed how the system could be checked for robustness.<br />

Second, it showed how the violations of the Level 1 region could be used in the redesign<br />

of the problem, using the minimum increase in design margin. Finally, it was shown that<br />

the robustness plots could be used to find weak optimization specs.<br />
