non-frozen design parameters, the default frozen states of the case. Thereafter, it will choose specs depending on the conditions of the last sensitivity run. If the last run of the sensitivity tools was performed in the same phase as the current, then the current nonfrozen design parameters are used. Thus, continuing in this manner, the design parameters will be refined until the optimization can move out of the current phase, or the optimization can no longer continue. When the optimization moves into a new phase, the run code resets the frozen states of the design parameters to the default values of the case. Design parameters frozen in previous phases were done so based on constraints that are no longer critical. Thus, using the default values increases the possible search directions, allowing the problem to proceed with the greatest chance of success. The design parameters are first checked for insensitivity. First, the gradient is calculated using the specs and design parameters. Sensitivity percentages are then calculated using this gradient. The process of removing insensitive parameters is simple. Any parameter with an insensitivity over 20% is frozen. After the insensitive parameters are frozen, the sensitivity automation then focuses on correlation of parameters. The gradient must be calculated again, so the insensitive parameters just frozen won’t appear in the Cramer Rao percentages, which are calculated next. As with the insensitivity check, all parameters with Cramer Rao percentages over 20% must be investigated. Unlike the check for insensitive parameters, the correlation check is much more complicated. When investigating correlated parameters, a person would look for pairs or groups of parameters with roughly the same Cramer Rao percentages. One parameter would be frozen from each group, the gradient and Cramer Rao percentages recalculated, and the 79
process would repeat until all Cramer Rao percentages were under 20%. When this process is automated, several areas of difficulties arise. The greatest difficulty is in the grouping of the parameters. Even for a person, determining the groups of parameters can sometimes be an ambiguous task. It is clear that dpp_RAHAR and dpp_RAHA belong together, as do dpp_RF and dp_RAHSF. However, it is not apparent which group of specs dpp_PF belongs to. It might be that it belongs to one of the two groups, or it might also be that all five parameters are correlated to some degree. Thus, while it can sometimes be difficult for a person to decide which parameters are grouped together, this difficulty is increased 80
