other refreshments. Then, after more dancing, they<br />

slipped home to bed be<strong>for</strong>e their families awoke. This<br />

is one of the most beautiful traditional stories of<br />

Krishna and his girlfriends.<br />

There are many tamal trees in Seva Kunja garden.<br />

These trees have blackish bark that is often compared<br />

to Krishna's skin color. One especially black<br />

tamal tree allegedly was the one Krishna clung to<br />

when he wept in separation from <strong>Radha</strong>. Although<br />

Krishna had many girlfriends, <strong>Radha</strong> was number<br />

one. Unless she was present, the love sports were incomplete.<br />

Sometimes, <strong>Radha</strong>-Krishna had a lover’s quarrel,<br />

and she spurned him <strong>for</strong> a while. At such times,<br />

he wept in separation from her. Once, weeping and<br />

clutching the black tamal tree, his touch <strong>for</strong>med shalagrams,<br />

black sacred stones. The god of love wept in<br />

separation from his beloved. Nearby at a golden tree,<br />

<strong>Radha</strong> experienced separation from Krishna.<br />

The garden has a small temple, a pool that<br />

Krishna magically made with his flute to give water<br />

to the thirsty cowherd girls, raised plat<strong>for</strong>ms <strong>for</strong> them<br />

to dance and sit on, and many rhesus monkeys. The<br />

packed white clay ground was swept clean.<br />

That evening, Sharma took me to some of the<br />

5,000 temples Vrindaban is famous <strong>for</strong>. Some are quite<br />

palatial while others are simple rooms in people’s<br />
