We decided to risk spending the money on cabfare<br />

to go downtown and raise more money. We went<br />

to the shoe shop of a life member where we met Gurudas<br />

and Yamuna on the way back to Vrindaban.<br />

They gave us money and assured us the Delhi devotees<br />

would return soon. We went to a restaurant, ate a<br />

good meal, and then got medicine. We soon felt better.<br />

The Delhi devotees in<strong>for</strong>med us that Tamal<br />

Krishna Maharaj was recruited to raise money <strong>for</strong> the<br />

Vrindaban temple. He planned a trip to Hyderabad in<br />

south India <strong>for</strong> this purpose. I phoned and arranged<br />

to join him in Calcutta.<br />

Tamal Krishna, three celibate male students,<br />

and I took a train to Hyderabad, which is a Moslem<br />

stronghold that sought to be part of Pakistan when<br />

India became independent in the 1940s. We took literature<br />

and slide shows of ISKCON's activities<br />

around the world. We also had letters of introduction<br />

from two Calcutta businessmen to their Hyderabad<br />

branch managers instructing them to provide full assistance<br />

to us.<br />

The managers met us at the train station. They<br />

arranged our stay at a good vegetarian hotel and<br />

meals at their homes. They also provided introductions<br />

to leading businesspersons of Hyderabad and a<br />

chauffeur driven car <strong>for</strong> our use.<br />

Tamal and I arranged a press conference and<br />

got front page coverage. We received many speaking<br />
