done graduate work with him, but the time and<br />

money was more than I wanted to invest.<br />

One day, I came home from work and found<br />

Jane took all her things and left a note <strong>for</strong> me. What a<br />

shock! I thought our relationship was good. She<br />

moved in with the postman who delivered mail to the<br />

store where she worked. It wasn’t too long be<strong>for</strong>e he<br />

pulled a gun on her, and she came back to me. We<br />

rented a new apartment and started over.<br />

My contract with the school ended, and I<br />

didn’t want to apply <strong>for</strong> a permanent position. I met<br />

with Jeannine Bish, a clairvoyant, industrial psychologist<br />

at the Whole <strong>Life</strong> Center in Palo Alto. She<br />

asked me to finger paint as we sat on the floor and<br />

talked. That was my job interview to become a staff<br />

member. I offered introductory hatha yoga and t’ai chi<br />

classes as well as astrology and tarot readings. I became<br />

friends with Jeannine, Rev. Rosa Miller a Cuban<br />

Gnostic priestess, and a Sufi healer who worked at the<br />

center.<br />

One weekend, Jane and I went with a girlfriend<br />

to her condo in Lake Tahoe. Jane told me she<br />

couldn’t live with me any longer. We were together<br />

about a year and a half. The difference in our ages and<br />

life experience was too much <strong>for</strong> her to deal with. I<br />

was thirty-one, she twenty-one. She wanted to grow<br />

on her own.<br />

I moved into a cooperative living arrangement<br />

in a large, com<strong>for</strong>table home in Palo Alto. It was a<br />

good place to live, but I had difficulty meeting ex-<br />
