puts its own life and welfare ahead of spiritual development.<br />

Be<strong>for</strong>e then, gurus such as Lalita Prasad and<br />

Bhaktivinode Thakurs took disciples and sent them<br />

off to lead their own lives. They weren’t pressured to<br />

live in monasteries dependent on the guru. Family life<br />

was encouraged. Bhaktivinode Thakur was a family<br />

man with many children as well as a magistrate,<br />

author, poet, and great devotee. He became a recluse<br />

after leading a full life.<br />

Following the rising tides of Vivekananda and<br />

the Ramakrishna Mission’s Hindu revival, Bhaktisiddhanta<br />

revived Chaitanya’s movement throughout<br />

India, started temples, and sent disciples to Europe.<br />

His disciples ran the Gaudiya Math centers that he<br />

started. Tirtha Maharaj was one of the most cunning<br />

and became overall manager in spite of Lalita Prasad<br />

warning his brother about him. Lalita Prasad dropped<br />

out of an active role in his brother’s ministry then.<br />

When a beautiful marble temple became the Calcutta<br />

headquarters, corruption set in.<br />

Lalilta said, Tirtha Maharaj tried poisoning his<br />

guru, Bhakti-siddhanta, a couple of times, but Bhaktisiddhanta<br />

made it to Lalita Prasad who saved him.<br />

Finally, he was poisoned and locked in his room so he<br />

couldn’t go <strong>for</strong> help. It was the kind of poison known<br />
