a Fargo club where some great bluesmen like Cocoa<br />

Montoya and Jon Hammond per<strong>for</strong>med. We also did<br />

some songs at church worship. We became good<br />

friends, and I enjoyed getting together with him and<br />

his family.<br />

My mother visited us, and we went to the badlands<br />

in southwest North Dakota. We stayed at the<br />

Roughrider Inn where Teddy Roosevelt stayed with<br />

his men. We also saw an outdoor play about him. It<br />

was a big disappointment that my son John never<br />

wanted to visit us in Valley City. I hoped that when he<br />

got to be a teenager, he’d want to live with me, but<br />

that was not to be.<br />

While the previous pastor left the area and<br />

served another church, a <strong>for</strong>mer pastor from long ago<br />

moved away and returned to Valley City with his<br />

wife after retirement. He had dementia, was argumentative,<br />

and criticized my baptismal policies.<br />
