packs and bought a bottle of Benzedrine at the pharmacy<br />

to keep me awake during the trip. Paul hitchhiked<br />

to meet me. When I crossed the border, a customs<br />

agent went through my bag and found the bottle<br />

of Benzedrine.<br />

I told him, “I’m a college student. I don’t usually<br />

use drugs, but I had to stay awake during the trip<br />

and keep an eye on my bags so no one could steal<br />

them. I bought the pills legally down there and just<br />

<strong>for</strong>got to take them out of my pack. I wasn’t trying to<br />

smuggle it. Please don’t ruin my life.” He gave me a<br />

warning and let me go.<br />

I went to a pawn shop and sold my guitar.<br />

Then I got a good meal. I slept in the bus station on<br />

the Mexican side <strong>for</strong> a couple of days waiting <strong>for</strong><br />

Paul. When he arrived, we took a bus to El Centro,<br />

Cali<strong>for</strong>nia. We checked into a cheap hotel and got<br />

work picking asparagus. We came down with Montezuma’s<br />

revenge and had a hard time picking in the<br />

hot sun. We only made enough to pay <strong>for</strong> our room<br />

and meals. We saw the job as a dead end. I made a<br />

collect call to Grandma Minnie in New York, and she<br />

wired me a couple of hundred dollars.<br />

We took a bus to San Francisco to check out the North<br />

Beach beat scene and get some good work. The night<br />

we arrived, we slept sitting in chairs in the bus sta-<br />
