was hard on me. I hung in there <strong>for</strong> the year. After<br />

work, I often went to a health club and did the triathlon—sauna,<br />

steam room, and hot tub.<br />

My mother and sister<br />

visited me. It was the<br />

first time I saw them since<br />

Philadelphia, right after I<br />

took sannyas. We had a<br />

good visit and got reacquainted.<br />

I networked and<br />

preached in San Francisco. I<br />

went to the New College of<br />

Cali<strong>for</strong>nia and spoke to the<br />

dean about teaching there.<br />

She said I knew more about spirituality than the professors<br />

due to my first hand experiences. Yet she<br />

couldn’t hire me because I lacked a Ph.D., and she<br />

couldn’t give me one based on my life experience. She<br />

referred me to Malcolm McAfee who ran a university<br />

without walls named Paideia and could grant me a<br />

degree.<br />

Malcolm had a postdoctorate in sociology and<br />

was a Presbyterian chaplain at Stan<strong>for</strong>d. He went into<br />

alternative education and encouraged people to be<br />

generalists rather than specialists. Paideia met in a<br />

San Francisco coffee house in the evening.<br />

He told me to read The Social Construction of<br />

Reality as the basis <strong>for</strong> our discussions--based on<br />

which, he granted me a B.A. in General Studies<br />
