My mother and sister
visited me. It was the
first time I saw them since
Philadelphia, right after I
took sannyas. We had a
good visit and got reacquainted.
I networked and
preached in San Francisco. I
went to the New College of
California and spoke to the
dean about teaching there.
She said I knew more about spirituality than the professors
due to my first hand experiences. Yet she
couldn’t hire me because I lacked a Ph.D., and she
couldn’t give me one based on my life experience. She
referred me to Malcolm McAfee who ran a university
without walls named Paideia and could grant me a
degree.
Malcolm had a postdoctorate in sociology and
was a Presbyterian chaplain at Stanford. He went into
alternative education and encouraged people to be
generalists rather than specialists. Paideia met in a
San Francisco coffee house in the evening.
He told me to read The Social Construction of
Reality as the basis for our discussions--based on
which, he granted me a B.A. in General Studies
