rides at a carnival, and laid pipeline in the desert.<br />

I received a letter from Prabhupad saying I<br />

should go to New York and help Rayarama publish<br />

Back to Godhead, the Krishna movement’s monthly<br />

magazine. A country-western singer at the hotel<br />

lounge who befriended me gave me the plane fare.<br />

Tosan was left in charge soon to be joined by Pat who<br />

was now Patit Uddharan and another devotee who<br />

had been sending a hundred dollars a month to help<br />

support the temple.<br />

I struggled and was not real successful in Santa<br />

Fe from a certain perspective, but I had many good<br />

experiences. Huh! Maybe that’s the story of my life.<br />

Back to Godhead<br />

I wrote several articles <strong>for</strong> Back to Godhead and did<br />

some printing. Now, my main work was writing, doing<br />

layout, and coordinating with the printer. The<br />

magazine had a circulation of 5,000 copies a month<br />

when I joined it. Devotees sold it on the streets by approaching<br />

people in downtown areas of big cities.<br />

It was a thirty-two page magazine with a<br />

glossy full color cover. Composition was done on an<br />

IBM typewriter by Jayadvaita. Damodar was the art<br />

director. Rayarama, who also wrote <strong>for</strong> Marvel com-<br />
