Starting Temples<br />

Jananivas and I took a bus to the freeway ramp<br />

and hitchhiked south. We heard Seton Castle was <strong>for</strong><br />

rent outside Santa Fe. It is a huge, fifty room haunted<br />

hacienda that was the home of Ernest Thompson Seton,<br />

one of the founders of the Boy Scouts. It is located<br />

in the Sangria de Christo Mountains about six miles<br />

out of Santa Fe in Seton Village. Mrs. Seton rented to<br />

us. The rent was a reasonable one hundred fifty dollars<br />

a month.<br />

I phoned <strong>for</strong> Krishna Devi and other devotees<br />

to drive down and join us. About half the Haight<br />

Ashbury temple came. I taught classes daily, hiked in<br />

the mountains, managed temple affairs, and worked<br />

down the hill in the printing and wrought iron shop<br />

run by the Seton's son.<br />

We soon discovered Mr. Seton's ghost lived in<br />

the castle along with a number of Indian ghosts from<br />

the local burial ground. The castle was left just like<br />

when Seton lived there. His buckskin jacket still hung<br />

on the chair at his desk. There were numerous Indian<br />

artifacts he collected. Our skin crawled when we entered<br />

some unused rooms. Sometimes the ghosts entered<br />

our quarters and bothered us.<br />

A Hopi medicine man and artisan lived in the<br />

village. He was a friend and tried helping us free the<br />

castle of its' numerous Indian ghosts. We were unsuccessful<br />

using both Hindu and Hopi methods such as<br />

blowing conches, trying to get the ghost to enter a<br />

feather, chanting, and burning incense. The Hopi ex-<br />
