loaded our stuff in the back, and the five of us packed<br />

into the cab. It was a long drive.<br />

We rented the first floor of a house on the main<br />

road at the edge of town. We printed brochures and<br />

started the Whole <strong>Life</strong> Center at our home.<br />

I did sidereal astrology<br />

readings and taught Bhagavad<br />

Gita and mantra<br />

meditation. We didn’t<br />

make enough money doing<br />

this. The woman who<br />

lived up stairs had a lover,<br />

Robb, who worked at a local<br />

horse breeding stable.<br />

He invited me to work<br />

there with him.<br />

I rode horses only a couple of times while in<br />

high school and knew nothing about working with<br />

them. Robb, a young black guy, said he’d show me<br />

the ropes. The owners were out of town. Robb took<br />

me to their house. We drank their liquor and had a<br />

smoke. Then he showed me the barn and horses. He<br />

said my main job would be to clean the stalls and help<br />

out. Robb helped me saddle up owner Jeff Pettyjohn’s<br />

quarter horse Red. I took him <strong>for</strong> a ride past my house<br />

to show Sucitra and the kids. I got Red back to the<br />

barn, and that was my initiation into horse ranching.<br />

They owned two stallions, a thoroughbred and<br />

an Arabian. We mostly bred thoroughbred mares.<br />

They were spirited horses and things got wild at<br />
